Description

“When the Cimmerian king lay dead at my feet and I tore the crown from his bloody head and placed it upon my own, I had reached the ultimate limit of my dreams. I had prepared myself to take the crown, not to bear it. In the old free days all I wanted was a sharp sword and a straight path to my enemies. Now no path is straight and my sword is useless,” - Conan.

The Cimmerian’s transition from wandering adventurer, mercenary, pirate, and warrior to monarch of Aquilonia was not easy. Conan valued action above the mire of the bureaucratic society he was forced to navigate and in which he became the leading figure alongside his wife, Queen Zenobia, and his son, Prince Conn.

Howard’s first Conan story, “The Phoenix on the Sword,” introduced us to Conan as King of Aquilonia, longing for his carefree days of adventure. This story also introduced us to Thoth-Amon, the Stygian sorcerer whose dark influence would torment the Cimmerian from the shadows. This conspiracy would eventually lead to the divine intervention that would bless Conan’s sword with the mark of the phoenix.

If “The Phoenix on the Sword” is the beginning for King Conan, “The Hour of the Dragon” closes his story as the only Conan novel by Howard. This tale follows a deposed Conan and the introduction of Zenobia, a slave who would become his queen.
